![]() ![]() Finn McCumhail might finally meet his match! I like to think they would be friends, because if they ended up fighting, I shudder to think what would happen. RICK RIORDAN: I would love to see what mischief Finn and Gum Baby would get up to. I hope readers will be reunited with old friends and make some new ones! RR.COM: Which character(s) would your protagonist want to go on a quest with? TEHLOR KAY MEJIA: I loved all the stories so much, but my favorite was Graci Kim’s “My Night at the Gifted Carnival”! Graci is just so naturally hilarious, and a rogue unicorn on the first page? I was sold immediately. ![]() I love a story whose inciting incident is a bad review! Cervantes’ “The Cave of Doom” was probably my fave. GRACI KIM: My favorite was Tehlor Kay Mejia’s “Bruto and the Freaky Flower” because who doesn’t dream of adopting their very own Chupacabra puppy?! ROSHANI CHOKSHI: I especially laughed (and by that I mean, spat out my coffee) when reading about Gum Baby’s adventures. KWAME MBALIA: Probably Sarwat Chadda’s The Loneliest Demon. It’s always “What did the demon do?” and never “How is the demon doing?” RR.COM: Besides your own, which was your favorite story in the collection and why? It came out much, much better.-Rick Riordan ![]() The anthology did not come out the way I hoped. We reached out to RRP’s deep bench of talent with some questions about The Cursed Carnival. Next week marks the on-sale date for the latest from Rick Riordan Presents, The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities, featuring nine RRP writers and Rick himself! ![]()

Along with its expected well-crafted procedural elements, Rankin has included several moments of wistfulness and regret, and MacPherson makes the most of every one of them. Exit Music is the seventeenth crime novel in the internationally bestselling Inspector Rebus series, written by Ian Rankin. ![]() Though Rebus’s mention of perusing his unsolved cases in retirement offers some hope of future sleuthing, this reads like a farewell novel. He even manages to lose the burr long enough to get past several Russian-thick accents. At 60, it’s retirement time for Rebus and, as expected, Rankin’s rebellious series hero isn’t going quietly. Even before el Kaliouby broke ground as a scientist, she broke the rules of what it meant to be an obedient daughter and, later, an obedient wife to pursue her own daring dream.Īfter earning her PhD at Cambridge, el Kaliouby, now the divorced mother of two, moved to America to pursue her mission to humanize technology before it dehumanizes us. Growing up in Egypt and Kuwait, el Kaliouby was raised by a strict father who valued tradition-yet also had high expectations for his daughters-and a mother who was one of the first female computer programmers in the Middle East. Rana el Kaliouby is a rarity in both the tech world and her native Middle East: a Muslim woman in charge in a field that is still overwhelmingly white and male.
