The writing was very simple and I genuinely wondered several times why it hadn't been rated a YA novel. When I first started reading this I decided by about chapter two that I probably wasn't going to like it. Thanks to pure luck Sam finds himself in the good graces of the Captain which makes his life a bit easier, but all Sam really wants to do is go home. Unfortunately for the twins they should have listened and because they didn't Sam finds himself as a prisoner on the Bone Rattler, a pirate ship known for its ruthless band of pirates. And as children, sheltered children especially are wont to do they disregard their parents rules and wander down to the docks to get a closer look at the pirates everyone on the island has been talking about. The twins are extremely sheltered, to the point where they don't even know the name of the island they live on. Sam lives on the top of Lighthouse Island either his twin sister Molly and their parents where they run a tavern.
